Ride a bike. Extend your life.
On June 6 my brother Paul would have been 53 years old. Three years ago he suffered an aortic dissection and died in surgery, just shy of his 50th birthday.
It’s all too common of a story. He was in the prime of his life. He was at the height of his legal career. His three children were thriving. He had just purchased a lake-front property and was planning his dream cottage to where he and his wife would retire.
He worked hard in a high -pressure job. He had bills to pay. He was a weekend warrior athlete but otherwise got no exercise. Sounds like a lot of people I know.
Then he was dead.
Heart disease and stroke kill someone every 7 minutes in Canada. It is the number one killer of women.
On Sunday June 3 my family is participating in Ride for Heart. We are doing this to honour my brother’s memory and to raise money for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Our fundraising focus is Healthy Children and Youth.

It is a family activity because our children need to know what we do affects our health and the health of our community. Plus it’s really fun to ride the DVP traffic-free.
Last week I wrote about the obesity epidemic that is intimately connected to heart disease. The issue is complex and insidious. But we have the power to create solutions.
The single best thing you can do for your heart and for your heath is exercise 30 minutes per day – 60 minutes for kids.
For the month of June I challenge all of you, including my own family to exercise 30 minutes every single day of the month. Do anything. Just move it. Or lose it.
Ride a bike. Extend a life. The life you are saving could be yours.
