Strong heart. Fit body. Calm mind.

Strong heart. Fit body. Calm mind.
Two great things happened this week. My family participated in Ride for Heart and the 30-Class Challenge started at Retrofit.
The Ride for Heart was awesome. We joined over 13,000 cyclists riding the Gardiner Expressway and the Don Valley Parkway. The energy and enthusiasm was infectious. There were all sorts of riders from the totally geared-out athletes racing the 75k route to toddlers in bike seats and youngsters on trailer bikes (my kids included), young, old and all sorts of variations of able.
We were all riding for a shared purpose – to support the
important work of the Heart and Stroke Foundation. I am proud to say my little
family raised almost $2000 for the cause. And the whole event raised over 5
million dollars.
But we each rode for a personal purpose as well, in memory
of someone we have lost to heart disease or stoke, in celebration of a
survivor.
And we all rode because we can. We have the health and the
ability to cycle 25 or 50 or 75 kilometers on a Sunday morning. And by doing so
we remind ourselves how important our health is and how necessary it is to keep
it.
On June 1 the 30 Class Challenge started at Retrofit Pilates. Over 100 participants have challenged themselves to complete 30 Pilates classes in 30 days in the month of June.
“In 10 sessions you will feel the difference, in 20 sessions you will see the difference, and in 30 sessions you will have a new body.” (Joseph Pilates, Return to Life Through Contrology, 1945).
Our 30-Class Challengers are working toward a whole new body by summertime, fueled by a month of intensive, focused, daily Pilates practice. The transformative benefits they will reap to mind and body will indeed be great:
- Toned, long, lean muscles.
- Increased strength, flexibility and stability.
- Stronger backs and healthier bones.
- Better posture, increased vitality.
- Grace. Poise. Calm.
The enthusiasm of the Challengers has already brought another level of infectious energy to the studio. It is going to be an exciting month.
But what I am most excited about is that over 100 people have committed to exercising every day for one month. This will impact their physical and mental health in such a profoundly beneficial way that by summertime, not only will each have a whole new body, each may be a whole new person.
