On May 31, 2004, I smoked my last cigarette. Quitting smoking is one of my proudest accomplishments. I was a pack-a-day smoker for 20 years. I smoked when I was happy, when I was sad, when I was nervous, when I was bored, when I was hungry, when I was tired, when I was wound-up or wound-down. It was part of my life and my identity. It was also my dirty little secret. Quitting smoking was hard. It required a lot of changes in my life. For a long time I had to completely avoid certain places and people. But there was no trick to it.
