I’ve wanted to be the girl on the flying trapeze since I was 4-years-old when I saw my brother’s kindergarten class do a Circus performance. My brother got to be the Ring Master. The prettiest girl in the class got to be the girl on the high wire.

I usher in September with mixed feelings. I am sad to say good-bye to the warm days of summer, the less-hectic schedule, the holiday weekends with friends and family, the bar-b-ques, the beach. But at the same time I welcome the return to routine and the feeling of starting fresh. I relish the sense of renewed productivity and determination.

Gratitude turns what we have into enough. A friend of mine passed this quote onto me the other day and it resonated deeply. Hearing it was like taking a deep breath in and a long exhale. We focus so much on what we don’t have, what we want, what we think we need. We strive, or not, for our desires and feel dissatisfied when we do not attain what we first envisioned. Desires are important to guide our actions. But they are only useful if they become attainable goals. A goal without a plan is just a dream. A life full of unfulfilled dreams is a life of want.

How can we affect positive change in our lives? I am told the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results. I believe this is true. But we are creatures of habit and for the most part, we don’t like change. We may want something to be different, but we cling fiercely to that with which we are comfortable. We focus on what we are good at and what we like, and we hope that the negatives will resolve.
