There are few dilemmas in life that cannot be improved upon with a tall glass of water and a brisk walk around the block. Whatever negativity you are feeling - frustrated, overwhelmed, confused, angry, grumpy, tired, fat, bored, broke, sore, - you will feel better after 10 minutes of exercise and some hydration. You may not have solved your problem, but your head will be clearer and you will be more energized.

Oh my aching back

A friend of mine has been completely felled by back pain. Two trips to ER, laid out flat in his bed, tons of painkillers. The docs can’t give him an exact diagnosis. They recommend rest and keeping the pain in check. In most cases, they say, back pain will resolve in a matter of days or weeks.

Today I might rephrase that statement. Health is the first requisite of happiness. Without our health we have nothing. Along with security of person and home, health is a basic human need. Health is different than fitness. But it is impossible, to maintain our good health if we do not maintain good physical fitness.

I have been reviewing some of Joseph Pilates’ writings for a television show I am currently shooting (more on that soon). In one of my favourite quotes from his book Return to Life through Contrology (1945), he states, “If your spine is inflexibly stiff at 30, you are old. If it is completely flexible at 60, you are young.”
