Progress is Personal: How Do You Measure a Year?

525,600 minutes, 525,000 moments so dear.
525,600 minutes – how do you measure, measure a year?
In daylights, in sunsets, in midnights, in cups of coffee.
In inches, in miles, in laughter, in strife.
In 525,600 minutes – how do you measure a year in the life?”

~“Seasons of Love” (from Rent, Jonathan Larson)

When we make something a habit, part of our daily lives, it can be difficult to see ourselves progressing. When it comes to Pilates, we certainly feel it at the beginning–the abdominal work, the shaky legs–but the longer we practice, the harder it can be to clock the small shifts that indicate a deeper connection to our bodies, and a deeper understanding of the work we’re doing.

Whether you’ve been at it for 25 years, or 25 days, whether you’ve taken chunks of time off or pushed through pandemics and children, new jobs or nagging injuries, it’s important to remember that progress is not linear. What we are able to achieve in one day or one hour can be fleeting or permanent.

Kudos to everyone who continues to show up and do the work, and thank you for making Retrofit part of your journey! Progress is personal–a Pilates practice can be different every single day, and it’s not always easy. Let’s make 2025 another year to remember.
